37. America - Tin Man

Found on: Holiday (1974)
Picked by: WA, EV

There was a definite obsession with the Wizard of Oz mythos in the '70s, wasn't there? From The Wiz to Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road to the cover or Electric Light Orchestra's Eldorado album to Dark Side of the Moon. Anyway, can anyone tell me what this song is about? I'm serious, I have no idea.

The tin man proved he had a heart in the end of the movie metaphorically and America basically said that he could not have lived without one, as well as recognizing what he and all of us learned in the end, which is that he did indeed have a heart all along. So believe in them when they say they're spinning round because of sharing the truth with us. Which consequently makes your head spin around and around. Get it.

I was going to put something similar to the first comment, but my word wouldn't have been so articulate. In other words, very well put!! That's always been my take on the song, but I'm sure there's other meanings. It would be interesting to find out from the band what the true meaning was..love your site!
